Bruney activated by Yankees, who cut Veras

NEW YORK — Reliever Brian Bruney has been activated by the New York Yankees, who designated Jose Veras for assignment to open a roster spot.

Bruney, a 27-year-old right-hander, started the season as Mariano Rivera’s setup man but has pitched just once for the Yankees since April 21 because of a strained right elbow. He blamed the injury on the time he spent warming up during an umpires’ video review of a Jorge Posada home run.

He returned and pitched an inning on May 19, then went back on the DL.

Veras was 3-1 with a 5.96 ERA in 25 appearances. The Yankees have 10 days from Tuesday to trade him, waive him or send him outright to the minors.
