British Open 2009The 138th British Open which is famously know as the Open Championship is being played right now at Turnberry, Scotland and this is the fourth time that this tournament is being held here.

Being one of the most prestigious tournaments in the golfing calender of the world, the British Open is followed by plethora of fans from all over the world. As of now the first day has seen 59 year old Tom Watson leading the pack. He would be turning 60 this September. While his much younger competitors were seen playing in cool looking Tshirts, Tom preferred to be in a sweater.

Not only Tom who is 59 but this year has seen the older players fairing better than the younger ones. 52 Year old Mark O’Meara is at the 6th spot while his namesake Mark Calcavecchia, who is 49 is also at the 6th spot.

In this context Tom Watson has said in a recent interview to a major UK daily that,”With the crosswinds and the velocity of the winds, that’s when then young players have a hard time, when they have not only to measure the movement of the ball with the crosswind, but also the movement of the ball on the ground. That’s the thing about the Open Championship”.

Let us wait and see whether experience prevails over youth in this year’s British Open; it did so at least on the first day and Tom’s performance is the proof of it.
