Brewers OF Braun out of lineup with sore thumb

CINCINNATI — All-Star outfielder Ryan Braun is out of the Milwaukee Brewers’ lineup with a sore right thumb.

He was given the day off by manager Ken Macha for Saturday’s game against Cincinnati and replaced in left field by Frank Catalanotto.

Braun was hit by a pitch from Cincinnati’s Bronson Arroyo on Friday night. The ball hit Braun’s left hand and right thumb. He stayed in the game and had one more at-bat, grounding out. Braun said the thumb bothered him when he held the bat.

Braun received the most votes for an NL outfielder in the All-Star game Tuesday. However, he hasn’t driven in a run in his last 11 games and has only two hits in his last 20 at-bats, dropping his average to .310.
