Kiplagat, Makau Out of NYC Half-Marathon

NEW YORK — Top contenders Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands and Patrick Makau of Kenya have withdrawn from the NYC Half-Marathon because of knee injuries.

New York Road Runners said Tuesday that Kiplagat’s injury has kept her from racing since March. She set the half-marathon world record in 2007. Makau has tendinitis in his right knee and finished second in the NYC Half-Marathon last year.

The field for the Aug. 16 race features defending champions Catherine Ndereba of Kenya and Tadese Tola of Ethiopia and American stars Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor.

The 13.1-mile course starts in Central Park, travels through Times Square and finishes in lower Manhattan.
