Wakefield might pitch Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield might be ready to start Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

Wakefield, slowed by a bad back, threw a 25-pitch bullpen session before Thursday night’s game with Tampa Bay. The right-hander, 11-3 with a 4.12 ERA in 18 starts this season, hopes to pitch this weekend, but said the decision rests with team officials.

Manager Terry Francona said the Red Sox will wait until seeing how Wakefield feels Friday before making a decision. Junichi Tazawa is currently listed as Saturday’s probable starter.

Also, Daisuke Matsuzaka, out since June 20 due to a right shoulder injury, is scheduled to make around 75 pitches in his third minor league rehab start Friday for Triple-A Pawtucket.
