Gainesville- American Football player Brendon Spikes who plays for Florida Gators created quite a buzz recently when he was caught on camera trying to eye gorge an opponent on Saturday when his team clashed with Georgia. The video showed Spikes shoving his hand in Georgia player Washaun Ealey’s helmet and trying to gouge his eyes. Although Ealey did not receive any serious injury, the action is being considered to be extremely offensive as it could have blinded the player.

The incident received widespread coverage as it raised serious questions regarding the code of conduct of the players in the field. However, reportedly for his outrageous act the player has been suspended in the first half of the game against Vanderbilt which is scheduled to take place later. It is likely that Brendon might also have to face some more disciplinary action by his team. Florida coach Urban Meyer said after the incident that Spikes is an immensely emotional player and supposedly he was just retaliating after the Georgian player tried to rip off his helmet and poked his eyes earlier in the game.

Whatever the reason might be, this aggressive act has been despised from all quarters as many believe that Brendon’s action was intentional and nothing can justify such an offensive behaviour. However, some also argue that Brendon suspension is not enough and the management should have punished him more severely as there is no place for such unhealthy aggression on-field. Moreover, tough actions against the player would also have ensured that such incidents do not take place in future.
