Mark Waugh says Ponting will have win Ashes to keep Oz skipper’s job

SYDNEY - Former Australian middle-order batsman Mark Waugh believes that if Ricky Ponting loses a third Ashes series to England, his days as captain are numbered.

Ponting goes into his fourth Test series with England in charge of the Baggy Greens with one victory and two defeats to his name.

Only Billy Murdoch and Percy McDonnell have a hattrick of failures against the mother country - and both of those occurred in the late 1800s.

So were Ponting to join that prehistoric duo, legendary batsman Waugh believes the axe would fall sooner rather than later.

“Ricky knows he really needs to win this series to keep the captaincy. But I want him to stay until after the World Cup. He hasn’t got the same world-class bowlers as he used to. The players can make you look good or bad as a captain,” The Sun quoted Waugh, as saying.

“I suppose it’s not something you want on your resume - three lost Ashes series,” Waugh added. (ANI)
