Asian Games: Srinivasa Rao wins first gold for India in weightlifting

GUANGZHOU - Weightlifter Srinivasa Rao Valluri won the first gold for India at the 16th Asian Games in the men’s 56 kg weightlifting event here on Saturday.

Indian weightlifter Sukhen Dey bagged silver in the same event.

Meanwhile, ace Indian shooter Gagan Narang won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle team event today.

Earlier today, India kicked off its campaign with a silver medal in the 10m air rifle team event on the opening day of the shooting competition here on Saturday.

The team of Gagan Narang, Abhinav Bindra and Sanjeev Rajput, who had done the country proud in the recently held XIXth Commonwealth Games, clinched the medal as India finished second to China in the team event.

The Indian women’s team finished seventh in the 10 metre air rifle event, while the men’s team finished fifth in the 50 metre pistol event earlier today.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal also registered convincing victory in the opening match today defeating Indonesia’s Adriyanti Firdasari 21-16 21-17 in straight sets. (ANI)
