Asian Games hockey: Indian women lose to China 1-2

GUANGZHOU - India lost their last women’s hockey league match to China 1-2 to finish their pool engagements in fourth place at the Asian Games here Monday.

China scored through Zhishuang Wang (27th minute) and Xiaou Xu (30th) to take a 2-0 lead in the first half. India managed to pull one back through a penalty stroke in the 65th minute through captain Surinder Kaur.

India finished with nine points from six matches from three wins and three losses.

India, who won the bronze in Doha, will now take on third-placed Japan in the bronze medal play-off.

China finished at the top of the group with 16 points from five wins. South Korea were second, also on 16 points, with five wins and one draw. Japan garnered 12 points from six matches.

The Indian men’s team will take on Malaysia in the semifinals Tuesday.
