After CWG, Haryana to reward its Asian Games athletes

CHANDIGARH - After doling out millions to sportspersons from the state for their performance at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), the Haryana government has now decided to felicitate the athletes and medallists of the Guangzhou Asian Games as well.

At a state-level event to be held Wednesday in Panchkula, some 15 km from here, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will give cash prizes to medallists, coaches and participants of last month’s 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China.

State Sports Minister Gopal Kanda said Monday that a total of 81 players will be honoured at the function.

Gold, silver and bronze medallists will get cash prizes of Rs.2.5 million (Rs.25 lakh), Rs.1.5 million (Rs.15 lakh) and Rs.1 million (Rs.10 lakh) respectively.

Participants will be given Rs.2 lakh each.

Coaches of the gold, silver and bronze medallists will receive cash prizes of Rs.300,000, Rs.200,000 and Rs.100,000 respectively.

Players from the state won 13 gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals in the Asian Games.

Their performance in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi was even better, where Haryana’s athletes bagged 37 out of Indias total haul of 101 medals.

The gold medal winners of Asian Games are Vikas Yadav, Vijender Singh (boxing), Kaptan Singh, Samarjeet, Jagdeep Singh, Sonu Narwal, Jasmer Gulia, Jasmer, Anup, Manjeet (all men’s kabaddi), Manisha, Kavita Dangi (women’s kabaddi) and Sanam Krishan Singh (lawn tennis).
