NEW DELHI - The playing of the South African national anthem before the teams opening World Cup match here Thursday was stopped midway due to an audio glitch.

South Africa team media manager Lerato Malekutu confirmed this , adding that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had apologised for the goof up.

“It was unfortunate,” Malekutu told IANS.

“The people here told us that there was something wrong with the audio and that is why it happened. The International Cricket Council has apologised and we have accepted it.”

The ICC, in its defence, said they were not allowed to enter the ground when the glitch occurred.

“It should not have happened but when we tried to fix the problem, nobody was allowed in the ground due to security reasons,” an ICC official told IANS.

“The ground authorities did not let anyone before 12.10 pm and after that there was not enough time to test the equipment,” he added.

There were no hiccups when the West Indies national anthem was played.
