BANGALORE - Big-hitting Indian opener Virender Sehwag is recovering from an injury to his left ribcage to play against England in Sunday’s ICC Cricket World Cup-2011 Group B match at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium here, a senior official said.

“Sehwag is recovering from the injury. He will be fit to play Sunday as he has undergone a thorough check-up,” Indian team manager Ranjib Biswal told reporters here.

The dashing batter was hit in the ribcage by a local bowler when he was practising at the nets earlier in the day Friday in the National Cricket Academy ground, which is adjacent to the stadium.

Soon after Sehwag withdrew from the practice session, he was put on medication and later under observation.

“Sehwag was taken out of the practice session as a precautionary measure. No cause to worry from the minor injury. He will get over it soon,” Biswal asserted.

Sehwag struck a smashing 175 in the team’s tournament opener against Bangladesh at Dhaka Feb 19.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary N. Srinivasan also said in a statement later that Sehwag was expected to be fit for the big match against England.

In a related development, the BCCI asked the media to refrain from contacting Indian players, as the team wants to concentrate on its World Cup campaign.

“Members of the media are requested to refrain from contacting the Indian Cricket Team on phone/SMS for interviews/bytes, as players would like to concentrate on the ongoing World Cup matches,” Srinivasan said in the statement.
