LONDON - Blackburn Rovers confirmed Tuesday that they have signed South Africa midfielder Elrio van Heerden from Belgium’s Club Brugge.

The 25 year old has signed a three-year deal with the English Premier League club, and will join up with his new team-mates after competing for South Africa at the Confederations Cup later this month.

Van Heerden joins compatriot Benni McCarthy at Blackburn, with another South African, midfielder Aaron Mokoena, having left for Portsmouth.

He is expected to be the first of a number of arrivals as manager Sam Allardyce looks to rejuvenate his squad.
