BYU basketball coach diagnosed with cancer

PROVO, Utah — BYU basketball coach Dave Rose has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The university said on its Web site Wednesday that Rose’s family announced that tests from emergency surgery he had earlier this month to stop internal bleeding were positive for cancer. Rose had his spleen and a portion of his pancreas removed during the surgery.

Rose’s family says the coach had additional tests at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City last weekend. Doctors will decide on his treatment.

Rose is recuperating at home.

The BYU coaching staff will handle the daily basketball operations, including summer basketball camps, while Rose undergoes treatment.

BYU is 97-34 in four seasons under Rose.
