A brief look at Saturday’s play at the US Open

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A brief look at Saturday’s second- and third-round play in the rain-delayed U.S. Open at Bethpage Black (all times EDT):

Out in front: Ricky Barnes, who set a 36-hole Open record with an 8-under 132 total, held a one-stroke lead over Lucas Glover. Mike Weir, the first-round leader at 64, was at 134, three shots in front of Azuma Yano, David Duval and Peter Hanson.

Phil and Tiger: Phil Mickelson finished 36 holes at 1-under 139 and he parred the only hole he was able to complete in the third round. Tiger Woods, the defending champion and the winner when the Open was played at Bethpage Black in 2002, made the cut by a stroke at 3-over 143. He parred the only hole he played in the third round.

Still waiting: Ten groups didn’t even get to tee off in the third round before play was suspended for the day. Play is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Noteworthy: Sixty players, the minimum number, made the 36-hole cut at 4-over 144. Last year at Torrey Pines, 80 players made the cut at 7-over 149. In 2002, the other time the Open was played at Bethpage Black, 72 players made the cut at 10-over 150.

Quoteworthy: “You never know. I’ve got 36 more holes. … It’s one of those things where if I keep plugging along, just like any U.S. Open, keep plugging along, make a birdie here and there and we’ll see where it ends up.” — Tiger Woods, who was 11 strokes off the lead, on his chances of winning.

Key stat: There were 45 scores in the 60s in the first two rounds. When the Open was held at Bethpage Black in 2002, there was a total of 10 in the first two rounds.

Key pairing: Third round, Ricky Barnes, Lucas Glover, TBD.

Television: Sunday, 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m., NBC.
