Ravens WR Mason tells website he’s retiring

BALTIMORE — Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason has told a sports Web site he is retiring from the NFL.

His comments were posted on jocklife.com Monday. But Mason has not informed the team of his decision.

Kevin Byrne, the Ravens’ senior vice president of public relations, says for a player to officially retire he must send a letter to the NFL and Mason has not done that.

Mason’s agent, Peter Schaffer, did not immediately respond to a phone call and an e-mail from The Associated Press.

The 35-year-old Mason played a key role in helping Baltimore reach the AFC championship game last season, leading the team in receptions (80) and yards receiving (1,037).

Mason played eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans and four years with the Ravens.
