Veteran team, 1 rookie chosen for US roster

CHICAGO — Newcomer Brittany Bock was among 18 players chosen by coach Pia Sundhage for the U.S. women’s team that will play World Cup champion Germany on Oct. 29.

The Olympic champion Americans will face the Germans at Augsburg, Germany, the first meeting since January 2007 between the world’s top two women’s powers. It will be the first time the United States has played in Germany since the summer of 2000.

Bock, a 22-year-old defender for the Los Angeles Sol, would make her first appearance for the national team if she gets in against Germany.

Defender Lori Chalupny will captain the U.S. side in the absence of Christie Rampone, who is on maternity leave.

Shannon Boxx and Carli Lloyd, the United States’ two center midfielders who played key roles at the 2008 Olympics, were selected to the roster, as was Angela Hucles, the Americans’ leading scorer at the 2008 Olympics.

Abby Wambach, the nation’s active leading scorer with 100 career goals, and 22-year-old Amy Rodriguez were the only true forwards chosen to the roster.

The top two U.S. goalkeepers, Hope Solo and Nicole Barnhart, were both selected.

The United States is 16-4-4 against Germany.
