Montgomery, Merritt score 12 each as Samford cruises to 58-48 win over Spring Hill

Samford defeats Spring Hill 58-48

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Trey Montgomery and Jeffrey Merritt scored 12 points apiece and Samford cruised to a 58-48 win over Spring Hill on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (3-6) rebounded from a 73-40 loss at home to UNC-Greensboro on Dec. 5 by pulling ahead of the Badgers 27-11 with 2:50 left in the first half.

Tyler Schwab’s 3-pointer at the buzzer got Spring Hill, an NAIA school, within 31-20 at halftime.

Chris Dees Jr. hit a jumper to open the second half, cutting the deficit to nine, but Montgomery responded with a 3-pointer. Samford led by double digits until 46 seconds remained.

Bryan Friday and Josh Davis added 11 points each for the Bulldogs. Davis, who had been hitting 40 percent from 3-point range, was only 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. Samford shot 5-for-24 from long range.

Dees and Antonio Burch scored 12 points each for the Badgers, who were outrebounded 41-34.
