Canisius tops Southern Mississippi 59-56

GULFPORT, Miss. — Frank Turner scored a career-high 30 points to lead Canisius to a 59-56 win over Southern Mississippi on Tuesday night.

Turner shot 11-for-15 for the Golden Griffins (5-6) in the second night of the South Mississippi Christmas Classic. The win snapped a five-game losing streak.

The score was tied at 51 with 2:34 remaining, but Canisius took a slim lead, and two free throws from Turner put the Golden Griffins up 59-56 with 7 seconds left. Southern Mississippi had the ball with a chance to tie, but Angelo Johnson missed a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

Gary Flowers finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles (8-2), who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Maurice Bolden added 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

Southern Mississippi outrebounded Canisius 41-34, but committed 15 turnovers.
