India win first medal in South Asian Games

DHAKA - India won the first medal of the 11th South Asian Games with the women’s cycling team bagging the gold in the time trial competition Saturday.

The Indian team comprising Rameshwari Devi, Suchitra Devi, Mahidha and V. Rejani took 44 minutes 22.15 seconds to cover the 30-km distance at Khulna.

Pakistan’s Ayesha Amin, Misbah Mushta Ali, Rahila Banu and Sidra Sadaf took the silver with a timing of 47:04.06 sec while Sri Lankans Lasanthi Krishna, Nilaka Shymal, Nirushani Perera and Pushpo Rani (47:07.08 sec) got the bronze medal.

In men’s hockey, India demolished Nepal 21-0 at the Moulana Bhashani Stadium while Sri Lanka got the better of Bangladesh 3-1.
