Fifth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic ousted by Michael Berrer in 1st round of Zagreb Indoors

Tipsarevic upset in 1st round at Zagreb Indoors

ZAGREB, Croatia — Fifth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic was beaten by German Michael Berrer 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Zagreb Indoors.

Berrer, winner of last week’s Challenger event in Heilbronn, Germany, recovered from a 1-3 deficit in the second set to extend his run of success.

In the second round on Thursday, Berrer will face Croatian wild card Petar Jelenic, who won his ATP Tour debut against Serbian qualifier Ilija Bozoljac, 7-6 (6), 7-5.

Sixth-seeded Benjamin Becker of Germany recovered from a poor start against Swedish qualifier Andreas Vincuguerra. After losing the first five games, Becker won 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Becker will next face compatriot Philipp Petzschner, who also came from a set down to defeat Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1.

Daniel Koellerer of Austria defeated Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and will play the winner of Wednesday’s match between top-seeded Marin Cilic and Jan Hajek.

Lukas Lacko advanced when Denis Istomin retired with an injury while trailing 2-6, 2-2.

Also moving on to the second round was Alexandre Sidorenko of France, who beat Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3.
