LONDON - England’s ace midfielder David Beckham will be invited to become the figurehead of the Manchester United fans’ protest movement bidding to oust club owner the Glazer family from Old Trafford.

The former Manchester United hero picked up a green and gold scarf and wrapped it around his neck in a clear show of support for the home fans’ campaign against club owners, the Glazer family.

That was seen as a sign he backed the protest, The Sun reports.

Beckham can brace himself for a petition from 128,000 members of the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), who are leading the push to force out the Americans.

The MUST will be sending the same petition to United legend Eric Cantona asking him to become an ambassador for the movement.

MUST chief executive officer Duncan Drasdo said: “The gesture David Beckham made by putting on the green and gold scarf sent a powerful message to all United fans. Imagine what it would do if he now got fully behind the campaign.”

Earlier he said: “I did it as I’m a United fan, always will be. It’s not for me to comment about the ownership of the club or how it is run, that is for other people. I saw the scarf and I picked it up because it is the original colours of the club as Newton Heath.”

“I hope United now go all the way. They deserve to. It’s a great fanbase at a great club with a great manager,” he said. (ANI)
