US military deaths in Iraq war at 4,400

As of Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at least 4,400 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action. At least 3,485 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

The AP count is three fewer than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,827 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

— An American soldier died while conducting operations Monday in northern Iraq.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

— Staff Sgt. Amilcar H. Gonzalez, 26, of Miami; died Friday in Ash Shura, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

— Spc. Stanley J. Sokolowski III, 26, of Ocean, N.J.; died Thursday in Kirkuk, Iraq, in a noncombat related incident; assigned to Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
