Don, Snowsill win Hy-Vee Triathlon, $200K

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Great Britain’s Tim Don overtook the field with a strong closing run to win the Hy-Vee ITU Elite Cup Triathlon in Iowa, along with the sport’s largest winner’s check.

Australia’s Emma Snowsill took home top honors in the women’s event Sunday, winning in 1:59.35.

Don and Snowsill each pocketed $200,000.

Don won in 1:50.20, four seconds ahead of New Zealand’s Kris Gemmell.

Snowsill, the Olympic gold medalist in Beijing two years ago, crushed the field during the final two laps of the run and won by 16 seconds. It was the second win in Iowa for Snowsill, who also took home triathlon’s richest prize two years ago.

Fellow Aussie Emma Moffatt collected $50,000 for finishing second in the Olympic-distance race.
