Germany leads England 4-1 after 75 minutes

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — Thomas Mueller has scored two second-half goals to extend Germany’s lead over England to 4-1 after 75 minutes of their World Cup second-round match.

Mueller scored on the counter in the 67th, and netted his second 3 minutes later to push the score to 4-1. His first score came off a brilliant rush by Bastian Schweinsteiger, followed by a pinpoint pass.

Miroslav Klose opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Lukas Podolski netted Germany’s second 12 minutes later.

Matthew Upson pulled a goal back in the 37th minute, heading in a cross from Steven Gerrard to make it 2-1. Frank Lampard had a shot go off the crossbar and over the goal line a minute later — TV replays indicated his lofted shot bounced well past the line — but Uruguay referee Jorge Larrionda motioned for play to continue.
