Ghana, Uruguay tied at 0-0 after 30 minutes

JOHANNESBURG — Uruguay has dominated the opening 30 minutes but is locked at 0-0 with Ghana in the teams’ World Cup quarterfinal match.

Uruguay’s play is smoother, though its closest effort was almost an own goal by Ghana captain John Mensah in the 18th minute. A Uruguay corner was headed on by Edinson Cavani to Mensah’s shoulder and goalkeeper Richard Kingson showed good reflexes to push the ball clear.

Kingson twice saved well from forward Luis Suarez shots in the 10th and 26th.

For Ghana, Kwadwo Asamoah shot wide from distance in the eighth when a free kick was cleared to him.

Ghana would be the first African team ever to reach a World Cup semifinal. Uruguay last reached the semifinals 40 years ago.

The winner plays the Netherlands on Tuesday.
