LONDON - Holland football legend Johan Cruyff has branded the current lot of Dutch football stars as ‘vulgar’ after their defeat in this year’s World Cup final in South Africa.

“It was lamentable, sad, they played dirty and deserved to be down to nine players very early. There were two tackles so ugly and dirty that they even hurt me,” The Sun quoted Cruyff, as saying.

“It hurt me because Holland chose such an ugly way to try and win the title. This style has very little to do with proper football,” he added.

Cruyff, 63, is the greatest Dutch player of all time and starred in Holland’s brilliant Total Football team of the 70s.

He is rated as one of the three greatest players in the world alongside Pele and Maradona.

Cruyff believes his countrymen chose to kick Spain because they feared they would be outclassed.

Cruyff said: “Holland didn’t want to play. On Thursday they asked me ‘can we win playing like Inter Milan?’ “Can we stop Spain in the same way Jose Mourinho stopped Barca?

“I said no because I detest this style and because I thought my people would not dare renounce their style of play. I was wrong.” (ANI)
