White House mourns Yankees owner Steinbrenner
WASHINGTON — The White House is remembering New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner for what he did on the baseball diamond as well as for the contributions he made outside the house that Ruth built.
Steinbrenner died Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., after suffering a heart attack. He was 80.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says Steinbrenner touched the lives of people across the country through his work with various organizations and charities over a long and storied career. And that’s on top of the seven World Series titles he brought home to New York.
Steinbrenner gave millions to charity, often with the stipulation that his identity remain secret.
