Wondolowski and Earthquakes beat Wizards 1-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Chris Wondolowski scored his team-high seventh goal and new acquisition Khari Stephenson delivered his first MLS assist to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win against the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday.

Wondolowski, who hadn’t scored since June 2, volleyed home a perfectly delivered 25-yard chip pass from Stephenson in the 35th minute.

Stephenson was making his debut for the Earthquakes after spending five seasons on teams in Sweden and Norway. He recorded no assists while playing sparingly for Kansas City in 2004 and 2005.

It was the first home victory for San Jose (7-6-5) since May 8. The Earthquakes have not lost to Kansas City at home since Aug. 16, 2000.

The Wizards (5-9-5) went a man up in the 88th minute after defender Jason Hernandez was sent off on a straight red for a foul on rookie Teal Bunbury.
