Cavs’ Varejao OK after ankle sprain

CLEVELAND — Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao is not expected to miss any time after spraining his right ankle while playing in an exhibition game for Brazil’s national team.

Varejao hurt his ankle in a collision during a game on Wednesday in Logrono, Spain. A spokeswoman for Brazil’s team said an MRI exam after the game was normal.

Varejao is expected to play against France as the Brazilians tune up for the world championships, which begin Aug. 28 in Turkey.

One of the NBA’s top reserves, the 6-foot-11 Varejao averaged 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 76 games for the Cavaliers last season. The team will be counting on him following the departures of LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

A Cavs spokesman said the team has been in contact with Varejao, who explained what happened and confirmed that tests were negative.
