New York (GaeaTimes.com) - Washington Nationals has revealed this morning that their star rookie Stephen Strasburg might require Tommy John Surgery and will be out for 12 to 14 months for rehabilitation. In MRI, a significant tear in ulnar collateral ligament is reported to be visible. Mike Rizzo, general Manager of Washington Nationals has said on Friday that an MRI revealed the brutal injury of this 22 year old star player. Though Strasburg will travel to West Coast for a second Opinion, Rizzo thinks that he might require a surgery which will take a yearlong rehabilitation.

As you can imagine, he was initially upset. But he has really turned himself from being upset to being focused on his rehabilitation. He’s determined to get the surgery done and begin the process of rehabilitation.

said Rizzo.

Tommy John Surgery is a type of surgery usually done to reconstruct the damage of Ulnar Collateral Ligament. This is named after Tommy John. He was the first professional athlete successfully undergo this surgery back in 1974. In this surgery the damaged or torn ligament of medial elbow is replaced by a fresh tendon collected elsewhere from the body. There is a low risk factor in this surgery. Though the ulnar nerve might be damaged during the operation, the chance of damaging is very less. The rehabilitation period is very crucial and longer one. Players will have to undergo a yearlong recovery period after having this surgery.

Strasburg had this injury in the month of July. While he was warming up in the bullpen he got injured because of tightness of his forearm. This injury is common among athletes and in modern day Baseball players. As the forearm gets plenty of stress, it is quiet normal to have this kind of injury. But even though he had injuries, he felt this week that he is quiet capable of throwing the ball. But he was pulled off from a game on Saturday while he grimaced after throwing a ball shaking his hands and wrist.
