Albany defense stops Maine twice late for 3-0 win

ORONO, Me. — Herb Glass kicked a field goal in the first quarter and two Albany (N.Y.) defensive stops in the fourth Thursday night made it stand up for the Great Danes in a 3-0 season-opening win over Maine.

Glass’ 21-yard field goal completed an 11-play, 35-yard drive following an interception by Jake Ciccarello, and Albany held Maine twice on fourth down in the final minutes.

The first stop came with 5:57 left at the Albany 30 when Chris Treister’s pass to Derek Buttles was incomplete. Dave Plungas then stopped Treister for no gain at the Maine 46 with 3:12 left.

That allowed Andrew Smith, who rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries, to run down the clock as he carried four straight plays for 29 yards to the Maine 17.

Treister was 7-for-17 passing for 63 yards, and Jared Turcotte rushed for 90 yards on 18 carries for the Black Bears.
