Mary Kom reaches quarterfinal of world boxing

BRIDGETOWN - India’s M.C.Mary Kom reached the quarterfinals of the women’s world boxing championship, beating Australia’s Jenny Smith in the 48-kg category here Sunday.

The score was 9-0 in Mary Kom’s favor when the referee stopped the contest (RSC) at the end of the first round.

Four-time world champion Mary Kom will next meet 25 year-old Lynsey Holdaway of Wales.

Former World champion Laishram Sarita Devi defeated Alexandra Kuleshova of Russia 11-8 in a pulsating contest of the 51 kg category Sunday.

India had an unlucky day as far as the other three boxers were concerned.

In the 64 kg category, Pratibha Jakhar lost to Jackson Cashmere of the US by RSC when the score was 7-2 in favour of the American boxer.

In the 69 kg class, Kavita Goyat lost to Andrea Strohmayer of Germany 4-7.

In the 75 kg category, Aswathy Mol lost to Inna Sagaydakovskaya of Russia 1-5.
