Barton lifts Tuskegee past Texas Southern 21-14

MOBILE, Ala. — Nykeem Barton scored on a 1-yard run with 57 seconds left to give Tuskegee a 21-14 win over Texas Southern on Saturday.

Texas Southern (1-3) took over possession on its 3-yard line with 3:20 left and moved the ball out to the 17 before putting it in the hands of Arvell Nelson on second-and-11.

Nelson was sacked by Malcolm Crutchfield and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Brandon Mitchell on the Texas Southern 16.

Barton then ran for 5 yards three straight times to move the Division II Golden Tigers (3-1) down to the 1.

Barton finished with 58 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

The Tigers took a 14-7 lead on Nelson’s 1-yard run early in the second quarter, but Barton’s 5-yard TD tied it with 8:38 left in the half.

Martin Gilbert led the Tigers with 121 yards on 19 carries.
