William & Mary rallies late to beat Maine 24-21

ORONO, Maine — Backup quarterback Michael Paulus threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chase Hill with 20 seconds left on the clock to seal a 24-21 victory over Maine on Saturday night.

The Tribe (3-1, 1-1) scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 14-3 third-quarter deficit and notch their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season.

Trailing 14-3 with 7:09 remaining in the game, Courtland Marriner scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to pull William & Mary to within four points.

On the Black Bears’ (1-3, 0-1) ensuing possession, Tribe linebacker Dante Cook returned an interception 50 yards for the score as William & Mary took a 17-14 lead.

Maine retook the lead, 21-17, following a 3-yard touchdown pass from Warren Smith to Desmond Randall with 2:46 left in the game.

The Tribe then went on an 11 play, 70-yard drive in 2:26 to score the game-winning touchdown.
