Athletes, cyclists to take Delhi CWG to the streets

NEW DELHI - On Saturday and Sunday, the Commonwealth Games 2010 will literally hit the streets of Delhi through a ‘20 km race walk’ and a race by cyclists.

The men’s race begins at 6.30 a.m.. It will be followed by the women’s race, 15 minutes later. The Race Walk will traverse Sansad Marg and Rajpath. There are 55 athletes (23 women and 32 men) in the fray.

On Sunday (October 10), cyclists will pedal from Sansad Marg at 9 a.m. for the women’s 112-km Mass Start Road Race. As many as 83 athletes will be in action here. This will be followed by the men’s 168-km version, beginning at the same spot, at 1 p.m. This line-up includes 167 cyclists.

The two races will begin and end in front of the Free Church on Sansad Marg and will run through Rajendra Prasad Road, Janpath, Rajpath, Vijay Chowk, where the athletes will turn around, on to the Connaught Place outer and inner circles, the Minto Road underpass, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, from where they will get into a small circle and go back towards Sansad Marg where the race ends.

The people in Noida then will get a taste of the Games on Wednesday, October 13, as the city witnesses the women’s 29-km Individual Time Trial at 10.30 a.m. involving 45 ladies, on the Noida Expressway. This will be followed by the men’s event at 1 p.m where 83 men will be in action.

October 14, the last day of competition, will see the Marathon; beginning at 6.30 a.m. The 42.195 km circuit, beginning at Parliament Street(Free Church) running through Parliament Street(Free Church), Jantar Mantar, Barakhamba Road, Minto Road, Deen Dayal Upadhayay Marg, outer and inner circle of Connaught Place and Patel Chowk before culminating at Parliament Street(Free Church) again. The Marathon will see 35 athletes (23 men; 12 women) in action.
