Trecia Smith of Jamaica gets David Dixon award

NEW DELHI - Jamaican triple jumper Trecia Smith got the David Dixon Award as the most outstanding athlete of the Commonwealth Games here Thursday.

Trecia’s name was announced by Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennel during the Games’ colourful closing ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The award, named after former Commonwealth Games Federation Secretary, is given to the outstanding athlete for his or her performance, fairplay and contribution to the team.

It was introduced in the 2002 Commonwealth Games at Manchester.

Smith successfully defended the gold medal she had won four years ago in Melbourne with a season’s best leap of 14.19 metres here last Friday.
