MELBOURNE - Spin legend Muttiah Muralidaran has said that all-rounder Steve Smith is not ready to replace under-pressure Nathan Hauritz as Australia’s Test spinner.

Hauritz’s position in the Test team came under renewed scrutiny when he was attacked by Victoria batsman David Hussey in the Sheffield Shield match at SCG, returning figures of 0-57 from nine overs.

Muralidaran, the greatest wicket taker in Test history, said that Australian selectors had to keep their faith in Hauritz, amid calls for Smith to make his Ashes debut.

“Smith does not have much control and he must learn more about bowling spin before he plays Test cricket again,” FOX Sports quoted him, as saying.

“There are many things he must learn. He is not good for Test cricket at the moment. I don’t think Smith would do any better than Hauritz,” he said.

“I know Hauritz did not bowl well in India but lots of spinners have struggled there against Indian batsmen, who play spin very well. Hauritz should play in the Ashes,” he said. (ANI)
