LONDON - Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is personally funding 100 million pound to fund his club’s transfer spending.

The Russian billionaire is behind Chelsea’s bid to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool and is taking a much bigger role in the Blues’ other transfer targets.

Liverpool insiders believe the projected deal will go through before Monday’s transfer deadline. Abramovich does not want to burden the club with unnecessary debt.ut he will provide the funds to rebuild the ageing squad and alter plans to streamline Chelsea’s spending and ensure they make severe cutbacks, The Mirror reports.

After taking over Chelsea in 2003 Abramovich spent 240 million pound in under two years to strengthen an underachieving squad in an attempt to bring overdue success to Stamford Bridge.

His last major indulgence in the transfer market came in 2006 when he personally laid out 31 million pound to secure the signing of AC Milan’s Andrei Shevchenko. (ANI)
