RANCHI - Fans in Ranchi celebrated India’s victory over Bangladesh in inaugural match of the 2011 World Cup.

India defeated Bangladesh by 87 runs in the first match of the 2011 Cricket World Cup on Saturday at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Enthusiastic fans came out on the streets in the middle of the night, burst crackers with a hope that team would lift the trophy.

“Today Indian has shown that it is the best team in the World Cup (tournament) and nobody can stop India team from becoming the world champion,” said an Indian cricket fan.

Previously in 2007, India exited the event after losing to Bangladesh in the first stage. For Indian cricket fans it’s the revenge of the previous loss as India beat Bangladesh on its home ground.

Man of the match Virendra Sehwag, who scored 175 runs to lift India to a massive score of 370 runs, made Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan regret his decision to bowl first on a placid wicket, hitting 14 fours and five sixes.

Pace bowler Munaf Patel gave India’s depleted pace attack, which suffered a blow due to Ashish Nehra’s back injury, a boost by claiming four wickets for 48 runs in the win.

In this world cup the participating 14 teams are divided into two groups of seven from where the top four from each will qualify for the quarter-finals unlike in 2007, where 16 teams first competed in a pool stage, then a ‘Super 8′ stage of quarterfinals, followed by semi-finals and the final.
