The spirited Germans and the blind linesman showed door to the British as Germany defeated England by 4-1 today at Soccer City stadium in the pre-quarter of world cup 2010. It was one of the most awaited and exciting matches of world cup till now and after a hard clash Germans had their last laugh. The match was not easy for the Germans as it seems from the scoreboard. Obviously the young Germans have outplayed the British on the field but somehow it was not England’s day. They were simply deprived of a certain goal by Frank Lampard while they were lagging by 2-1 to the Germans. Actually history today repeated in soccer city but it did so in reverse. The same incident took place 44 years ago when the Germans were deprived of a goal in similar fashion in the world cup final of 1966. England won that historic match 4-2 and that was their only title winning knock.

Donovan’s 91st minute goal against Algeria pushed America into the round of 16. In their first match USA stole a point from England with a draw match. In their second match they were lagging behind by Slovenia in the first half. Slovenia was ahead with a score of 2-0. But in the second half of that match, USA came back strongly to make the score 2-2. In their last match against Algeria it was dramatic win for USA. The match was goal less up to 90th minute. In the 91st minute Donovan increased the margin. USA came in the round of 16 as a group topper from group c. This is happened for the first time for USA in the history of world cup of 80 years.

As Brazil’s spot in the Round of 16 was secure before this match after they won against Ivory Coast and North Korea. To top the group seed they would need a win or a draw. They did not take any pressure and were clearly playing a slow game to draw the match against Portugal. Portugal had a chance to be the top seed in the group but they had to beat Brazil. Their position in the Round of sixteen was not guaranteed but it would take a monumental task for Ivory Coast to beat North Korea with a nine goal difference and Portugal had to lose the match at the same time. Portugal also seemed to have decided to play for the draw instead though they played quite aggressively to win the previous match against North Korea with a margin of 7:0.

After two disappointing performances, England won this match against Slovenia and finally got their place in the round of 16. This is the first win of England in World cup 2010 after two draws against the US and Algeria. Jermain Defoe is the man behind the success of England today. We watched some crisp play and the hypnotic cadence of one touch passes. James Milner crossed to the front of goal struck by Defoe and pushed to the goalkeeper. In the 13th minute a free kick for England was given, but after 22 minutes finally Defoe broke the difference by making a goal. The 1-0 advantage takes England to the next round with five points. The first half ended with the score remaining at 1-0. Four minutes after the restart Defoe passed to Rooney to break Slovenia defense. The referee dismissed it because Rooney was caught offside. In the 56th minute Gareth Barry’s corner was met on the head of John Terry in the pole away but can still be pushed over Handanovic. After that his shot from close range hit the goalposts. And finally, the score of 1-0 was maintained until the end of the matches. The score of 1-0 victory pushed England to the 2nd position in group C, and they will now face the winner of Group D. After defeated by England, Slovenia was eliminated from this world cup.
