Ancelotti quits as coach of AC Milan

MILAN — Carlo Ancelotti has quit as coach of AC Milan, seemingly paving the way for him to take over at Premier League club Chelsea.

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said club director and former player Leonardo will replace Ancelotti.

“Leonardo will be the new coach of Milan,” Galliani said on Sunday. “He will be presented tomorrow at midday.”

Ancelotti announced his decision Sunday after Milan beat Fiorentina 2-0 in the last game of the season to finish second in Serie A and secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

“Myself and the club have decided to interrupt my contract that ends in 2010,” Ancelotti said. “I’m finishing now. I’m saying goodbye to this great adventure and I want to thank everyone. Our roads are parting.”

Ancelotti has been widely reported to be the front-runner to take over at Chelsea next season, with Guus Hiddink having left the club following Saturday’s FA Cup title after a stint as caretaking manager.

Ancelotti said he could not reveal his plans for the future.

“I’m not in a position to discuss my future as I haven’t reached any accord with any club,” he said. “Nothing has been secured in London.”

Ancelotti joined Milan in 2001 and has won two Champions League titles and one Serie A championship.
