Twellman scores 100th as Revolution rout Red Bulls

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Taylor Twellman became the fifth player in MLS history with 100 goals, scoring a pair in the second half to lead the New England Revolution to a 4-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

It was just the second match of the season for Twellman, who had been sidelined with a neck injury. He came on as a reserve to start the second half and didn’t take long to reach the milestone, scoring his first goal of the year in the 57th minute with a header off a cross from Sharlie Joseph to give New England a 3-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Twellman produced the 16th multigoal game of his career with a shot under Red Bulls goalkeeper Jon Conway off Steve Ralston’s league-record 131st assist.

Ralston and Jay Heaps also scored for New England (4-3-4), which extended its unbeaten streak over the Red Bulls to 12 games (7-0-5).

New York (2-9-3) saw its winless streak on the road reach 19 matches (0-13-6), suffering its eighth shutout loss of the season.

Heaps, playing in his 300th match, gave the Revolution the lead in the second minute of stoppage time to end the first half, converting a cross from Joseph for his first goal.

In the 52nd minute, Heaps outmuscled New York defender Nick Zimmerman for possession of the ball along the left sideline and crossed it to Ralston, who shot a header past Conway.

New England entered the match having scored a league-low 10 goals but scored four times in a 17-minute span against the Red Bulls, who fell to 0-9-1 when trailing at halftime.
