Golden Boy CEO: Mayweather has cartilage damage
LAS VEGAS — The chief executive of the company promoting Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s comeback fight says the boxer has damaged cartilage in his ribs and will stop training until a doctor says it’s OK.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told The Associated Press on Monday that Mayweather is in tremendous pain since suffering the injury in training last week.
Schaefer says the former five-division champ can’t train at all and can “barely sit.” But he says Mayweather’s ribs are not broken.
Mayweather(39-0, 25 KOs) was scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Schaefer says both fighters have committed to rescheduling. A date won’t be set until doctors know more about when Mayweather may recover.
