US seeks more information for World Cup bids

NEW YORK — The U.S. World Cup bid committee has requested more information from 37 cities as potential hosts for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

The committee is looking for information on a vast array of subjects ranging from tourism to climate to security. The requests for proposals are an important step in the United States’ application that is due to FIFA next May. FIFA will announce the two host nations for those two World Cups in December 2010, completing a 21-month bid review process.

The 37 cities range in size from New York City to college towns such as Fayetteville, Ark., or Knoxville, Tenn.

The U.S., Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and Russia have declared their interest in hosting those World Cups.
