USA has beaten Spain by 2-0 goals in this Wednesday’s semifinal of the Confederations Cup. Spain was a top ranked team, this win by the USA team has come as a pleasant surprise for soccer fans from US. USA moves onto the finals of the tournament and would be facing the winner of the other semifinal between Brazil and South Africa. Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey were the two goals scorers for USA. The Fans went crazy when Altidore scored in the 27th minute while Dempsey clinched the match with the second goal in the last half.
No one, neither the soccer fans nor the pundits could have predicted that this could be the eventual result of the match between Spain and USA as USA lags behind Spian in the FIFA rankings at the 14th place. Spain on the other hand have even been world champions and is known as a soccer giant with its local league being followed all over the world by soccer enthusiasts.
Sigi Schimid, the coach of the Seattle Sounders Football Club goes on to say, “it’s a huge win from the standpoint of confidence and what it means to your team spirit, it’s invaluable. There’s nothing you can re-create at training that’s going to give that kind adrenaline rush to your team.” Let’s hope that this new found enthusiasm takes US soccer higher and higher in the rankings and the ardent fans get more such opportunities to rejoice.
Back in 2000 when I was in USA, soccer was still in nascent stage there. My friend was a soccer coach for his daughter’s soccer team. USA has come a long way in establishing his soccer credentials.
