According to reports, Brazilian authorities are supposedly detaining the 23 year old wife of the slain former world boxing champion Arturo Gatti. Amanda Carina Barbosa Rodrigues has being held back by the legal authorities in suspicion of being involved in the murder. Speculative reports seem to indicate that Gatti had possibly been bludgeoned to death. His wife and infant son were reported to have been unharmed.
Police said that Rodrigues had been taken in to custody following her contradictory statements during interrogation. Reports suggest that the former junior welter weight champion had apparently been strangled to death with the strap of a purse, which had been unearthed from the scene of the crime with blood stains on it. Milena Saraiva, a spokeswoman for the Pernambuco state Civil Police told The Associated Press that the Canadian boxer also seemed to have had a head injury.
The investigation has not been concluded yet, but Sariva said that the legal authorities were in the process of preparing to present a formal charge-sheet against Rodrigues for Arturo’s murder. Police said that she had not been able to explain how she had spent 10 hours in the same room without noticing that her husband was dead.
The 37 year old Gatti who also used to be referred by the nickname of “Thunder” was vacationing at the posh seaside resort Porto de Galinhas in northeastern Brazil with his second wife and 10 month old baby on a honeymoon. His dead body was reportedly found by his wife in their hotel room early in the morning of Saturday. Blood stains were found on his neck and body as well as on the floor of the room. No bullet or stab wound was reportedly found on his body upon initial inspection.
Right from the discovery of the body, the police have been suspecting foul play in connection with the former boxer’s death.
