Seventh Street wins muddy Go For Wand
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Seventh Street battled back in the final sixteenth-mile after surrendering the lead to Spritely to take a hard-fought 1½-length victory in the $300,000 Go For Wand Handicap on Sunday.
The race for fillies and mares was run over a muddy track in a steady downpour at Saratoga Race Course.
Rajiv Maragh, who maintained a wide course throughout 1 1/8 miles run in 1:51.01, rode the Godolphin Stable-owned Seventh Street to her third win from five starts this year for trainer Saeed bin Suroor.
The 4-year-old filly battled for the early lead with longshot Color Me Up, prompting a strong pace before being sent to the front with a quarter-mile to run before meeting the challenge posed by Spritely, who yielded second money to Miss Isella in deep stretch.
Seventh Street, who earned $180,000, paid $4.90, $2.70 and $2.30. Miss Isella paid $2.50 and $2.20. Spritely paid $2.70 to show.
Earlier on the Saratoga card, Justenuffhumor had a decisive late burst that carried him to a 2½-length victory over Mambo Meister and Cowboy Cal in the $158,750 Fourstardave Handicap run over a rain-softened turf course labeled good.
Alan Garcia rode the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained 4-year-old, which is owned by Darley Stable. Justenuffhumor ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.83 in his fifth straight win, earned $95,400 and paid $9.50, $6.30 and $3.50. Mambo Meister paid $14 and $4.80 and Cowboy Cal paid $2.80.
