What was being predicted by various sports pundits over the last few days has finally come true. Floyd Mayweather Jr. has won big by unanimous decision in his fight against world lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. This win ensures that Mayweather remains unbeaten and this is not a small feat for Mayweather, who came back to the ring after a hiatus of 21 months.
Marquez (50-5-1) was no match for the bigger and stronger Mayweather who ended the bout with mind-boggling statistics of 40-0, with not less than 25 knockouts! This just shows why Mayweather has been rated amongst the tops 50 best boxers of all time by ESPN.
Marquez tried to fight hard from the very first round yet could not manage quick manoeuvres against his heavier opponent, Mayweather who had a catch weight of 146 pounds.
The fans cheered for Mayweather on his each and every powerful jab or shot. Mayweather was clearly the favorite, given his skill, weight, experience, track record and the sheer power in his jabs, which have manifested into 25 knock outs in his favor over the course of his career. It was a 12 rounds match. Marquez could hardly come within the proper striking distance of Mayweather, whose agility and power proved a bit too much for the Mexican to handle.
If fans had expected an interesting match, this was surely not one of them. It was clear from the very beginning that who would rule the rings for the next crucial hours. Maywether’s precision in the match is evident from the fact that almost 60% of his all jabs and punches connected unlike his opponent’s 16%.
