Karnataka beat UP; Abhimanyu Mithun claims hat-trick on debut (Ranji Trophy Round-up)

MEERUT - Medium pacer Abhimanyu Mithun made a sensational start to his first-class career, claiming a hat-trick and finishing with 11 wickets to power Karnataka to a 185-run victory over Uttar Pradesh on the final day of the Ranji Trophy Super League here Friday.

The hosts, chasing a victory target of 438 runs, were bowled out for 252 with Mithun taking five for 85.

The 20-year-old emulated Javagal Srinath’s feat of taking a hat-trick on first-class debut. Srinath had achieved the feat 10 years ago.

Mithun dismissed Piyush Chawla, Amir Khan and R.P Singh for his hat-trick.

The medium pacer claimed a match haul of 11 wickets, having taken six for 86 from the first innings.

Another debutant Manish Pandey, who came to limelight when he became the first Indian player to hit a century in Indian Premier League, had struck 194 in Karnataka’s first innings total of 405.

Karnataka pocketed five points from their first match.

At Vadodara, Azhar Bilakhia’s produced a match-saving knock of 91 to deny Delhi an outright victory in against Baroda.

Delhi, which piled up 591 in the first innings, enforced the follow on after bowling out Baroda for 326 with medium-pacer Sumit Narwal claiming five wickets.

But Bilakhia in the company of Rakesh Solanki (69 not out) stayed firm in the second innings and Baroda finished at 233 for four.

Delhi will have be satisfied with three points on account of their first innings lead.

At Pune, Bengal defeated Maharashtra by seven wickets and collected five points.

Bengal bowled out Maharashtra for 319 in the second innings with Ranadeb Bose (5-57) and Saurasish Lahiri (4-87) wrecking the visitors batting line-up.

Bengal were left to score 174 runs for victory which they made with three wickets in 54.2 overs.

Deep Dasgupta (54) and Wriddhiman Saha (59), Manoj Tiwari (35 not out) knocked off the runs for Bengal.

At Ahmedabad, Gujarat defeated Orissa by 159 runs. Orissa, chasing 380 runs for victory, were all out for 220. Mehul Patel (3-21) and Salil Yadav (3-52) were the wicket-takers.
